Music Marketing #1

Blog Post: Research and Planning Process for Music Marketing Project

Our music marketing project main focus is around introducing a new artist to the world. The objective is to create a marketing campaign for Richie Stein, a teen pop artist who is releasing his first song, "We Are Young" by Fun ft. Janelle Monáe but as if he sang it and was introducing it to the public for the first time. This project allows us to build Richie's brand from scratch, focusing on his image, audience engagement, and marketing strategies. Here is what we have so far:

Building the Richie Stein Brand:

We will make Richie Stein as an artist who identifies and has a main target group of teens and young adults. His first music video should capture the senseless energy and abandon that comes with being a teenager. The inspiration for the video is based on  Richie getting into some bad situations and doing "typical dumb teen stuff." This fits well with our marketing strategy for Richie as a troubled yet very relatable character, making it know it is ok to not be perfect all the time.

Social Media and Marketing:

In my group we are exploring platforms like Instagram and TikTok to engage directly with Richie’s target audience. These platforms are perfect for content, behind-the-scenes, and connecting through trends. While we’re still brainstorming ideas for Richie’s website, our goal is to create a place for streaming his music, posting updates, and selling merchandise.

For distribution, we’re considering  traditional platforms like Spotify and YouTube and innovative approaches, such as exclusive pre-releases on TikTok.

Music Video Development:

The music video is the main piece of our campaign. We chose to do a storytelling type of music video with a mix of giving importance to the main subject, in our case the singer. From the storyboard we developed, the storyline. It talks about Richie's experiences with friends who push limits, capturing the free-spirited and the nature of being young. We plan to start shooting at school, but we will also add outdoor shots to really drive the "wild" concept. This helps brand Richie as a creative artist with promising unique ideas.

Research and Insights:

In order to build the character, it was important to research existing artists already in the pop genre. I researched Ariana Grande's brand development, social media strategies, and elements of music videos. This further informed me on the pop culture and marketing techniques and as a group and our findings, guided our decisions on Richie's campaign.

My Contributions:

I started our project by creating our storyboard, drawing scenes for the music video that best align with Richie's brand narrative, or the main focus of his first song to the public. I collected information for our presentation: points that make a big impact in any campaign. In doing so, I got to create Richie's story, visually and conceptually.

Organizing:

Our group tracks the progress by following a developed schedule. We assigned a particular task to each group member and established a date for brainstorming, filming, and editing. This schedule has helped us to remain focused and ensure that everything about the campaign will be what we want for Richie Stein and his story. Here below is our schedule to guide ourselves.

Next Steps:

We still have work to do, including filling out distribution plans and live performance ideas. However, with our research and creativity, we’re sure Richie Stein will make capture the attention of many and make a name for himself. Stay tuned for more updates!
